How do companies deal with an employee who is hurt? Companies with injured workers can handle the report of soreness in a variety of ways, and it is important to understand how different responses lead to different outcomes. Having a therapist come to the jobsite can help a sore employee feel better and get back to work.

Example

Let’s take an example of Trent, a construction worker. While working, he dropped a wrench, caught it awkwardly and felt pain in his elbow. He told his foreman that he was hurt and asked what he should do. This moment is a critical space where the foreman and Trent have two options for what comes next.

Path 1

One path is that the foreman schedules Trent to see the onsite therapist. The therapist arrives onsite and assesses Trent’s arm, applies heat or ice, performs soft tissue work, applies kinesiotape, coaches in dynamic movement, observes him working, and provides instructions for at home. The therapist provides education about the elbow and healing process, which reduces Trent’s concerns and anxiety about the soreness and his fear of surgery. The therapist suggests modifications to Trent’s job tasks to reduce risk of further soreness, and Trent keeps going to work. Trent continues seeing the therapist over the next week or two and does not need to see the doctor, go to skilled therapy, or have surgery. The employer paid for the therapist’s visits at a cost that is less than $1,000.00.

Path 2

The other path is that the foreman tells Trent, “Go to the doctor.” Trent leaves his shift early and drives to his doctor’s office. He tells the doctor about what happened at work, emphasizing how physical his job is, that he cannot do his job without his arm at full strength, and that something is seriously wrong with the elbow because it hurts so bad. The doctor decides to take him off work for two weeks, orders an MRI and Physical Therapy, and schedules a follow up for one month. The employer now has a work comp claim, and a bill that has only just begun to add up direct and indirect costs for the employer, including a missing team member.

Which path would you prefer?
